Update for New International Students: Confirming Application Status (Cape Breton University)

Here's message from Bilynda Whiting, Director, Enrolment Services, Cape Breton University for May Intake 2020 Students:
 Cape Breton University

To all incoming Cape Breton University students:

Cape Breton University’s response to COVID-19 has always been guided by our commitment to the health and safety of our campus community and informed by recommendations being made by the Nova Scotia Chief Medical Officer of Health. Information about COVID-19 is rapidly changing and the University’s response continues to evolve along with it. With that being said, please know that on Sunday, March 22, Nova Scotia Premier Stephen McNeil officially declared a state of emergency for our province.

On Friday, March 20, 2020, the Government of Canada stated that exemptions to air travel restrictions will be made for international students who hold a valid study permit or have been approved for a study permit prior to March 18, 2020.

Despite this announcement, and keeping the safety and well-being of you, our current students, faculty, staff and the broader communities in Cape Breton top of mind, we at Cape Breton University stand behind our initial decision to defer all new international students planning to begin their studies in May 2020. Our goal right now is to defer your start date to September 2020; however, as you know, the situation the world is facing with COVID-19 changes daily, and the start-date may need to change once again.

 Next Steps:

  • Please confirm you are still interested in attending CBU, but for a future intake (September 2020). By not confirming, CBU has the right to withdraw your application effective seven days in receipt of this email.

  • When you confirm your attendance, you must include your name, student ID and date of birth.

  • Current Notices of Acceptance (NOAs) for May 2020 are no longer valid. New Notices of Acceptance for September 2020 will be issued as soon as possible, once your confirmation is received. Again, keep in mind, this date may change.

I know this news may be difficult, but I hope you can understand the reason for our decision. We are working hard to develop plans to support you during these challenging times, and we look forward to welcoming you to our community at a future start-date. You will hear from us again soon.

All up-to-date information regarding COVID-19 and CBU can be found at www.cbu.ca/covid19

Thank you for your patience and cooperation as we work through this changing situation.

Please stay safe.

Sincerely,

Bilynda Whiting
